Storytelling Toronto has been an integral part of the international storytelling community for four decades. The organization grew out of the very first Toronto Storytelling Festival in 1979, and has expanded its reach to a regional, provincial and national scope. Our mission & vision is to create and sustain space for the art of oral storytelling. We have been actively engaging in developing programs and services that are equity inclusive and touch on all aspects of developing well-rounded artists. We are seeking someone who has a strong sense of volunteerism and are looking to contribute their legal expertise to the arts community we serve.

Position Overview

  • An understanding of non-profit compliance policies and procedures
  • Risk management skills to steward the organization to success
  • Strong expertise and experience in the legal and/or compliance sector on both the provincial and federal level
  • Time Commitment: Attendance at monthly board meetings and quarterly committee meetings. Approximately 6 hours per month or as needed.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Be a resident of the Greater Toronto Area and support the Storytelling Toronto mission, vision and values
  • Strong legal acumen, understanding of non-profit responsibilities, and risk management skills
  • Hold a legal designation and/or have comparable experience
  • Understanding of internal and external controls
  • Be familiar with a governance-based Board of Directors and non-profit organizations, including the specific legal requirements of a registered charity
  • Collaboration skills that you can apply to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams
  • Strong, strategic self-management and organizational skills
  • The ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly

How will you be supported in your role as a Board member?

You will:

  • Participate in an on-boarding process that will orient you to the Board’s governance model, practices, strategic priorities and activities
  • Receive a Board policy manual, orientation materials and contact list for all Board members
  • Engage in occasional check-ins with the Executive Director to explore the areas in which you can align your skills, experience and interests with the needs of the organization
  • Be invited to build community and connection through bite-sized activities integrated into monthly board meetings and other board development opportunities
  • Be assigned a “buddy” so that you can be mentored by an established Board member, ask questions and get up to speed on the organization’s priorities and activities
