Who We Are

We are a long established charity, more crucial than ever in the cost of living crisis. BAC has offered walk in advice and legal services since 1966. It is a community asset founded in its people. Over the last half century, it has made it possible for tens of thousands of local residents to access life changing free advice services and legal help.

OUR MISSION

We empower local people to address the inequalities they and have the confidence and skills necessary to navigate the challenges.

The Role

Trustees are the people who make the final decisions at charities. They set the strategy of the charity and work with the Chief Executive and staff who run it day to day. They scrutinise the ideas, work and impact of a charity and also act as its ambassadors. They do it best by being formed by members of its community.

They are volunteers and need to be over 18. There are no specific qualifications to be a Trustee and you don’t need to know everything about charity work to become one. However Trustees will be obliged to understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of being a Trustee. They are expected always to act in the best interests of the charity.

Being a Trustee takes mainly passion and enthusiasm. It can provide experience, training and hands on learning that you may not be able to get elsewhere and which will benefit you for life. It’s a great way to meet people and get to know your community. It’s an important role with a serious purpose but it is also very enjoyable.

You need to live or work in Lambeth. You do not need to have been a Trustee before. We offer induction, training on governance, and a supportive Board member to answer questions and hear what you have to say. This makes sure both experienced and first time Trustees feel welcome.

We encourage applications from the Black and global majority community, all genders, people who identify as LGBTQ+, people with disabilities or long term conditions, a range of ages, socio-economic brackets, career stages or educational backgrounds. We have been an equal opportunities organisation since our start nearly 60 years ago.

Our Chair is a former service user at BAC, our Secretary was a school governor, we have had Trustees who have been local residents, activists, former councillors, and everything in between.

We are interested in hearing from those with particular skills or knowledge in the following areas, but not to the exclusion of other skills:

· Income generation and fundraising

· Media, PR and marketing, especially digital development

· Business strategy and organisational development

· Public and community engagement and placemaking

· Legal Aid/advice sector (all aspects)
