Registered non-profit charity set up in 2000. We provides inclusive holistic educational services to adults,children & families living on low incomes from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve and develop new skills.

Position Description

Seeking multiskilled Trustees to join board to drive the organisation’s strategy and create a positive, sustainable impact.

We need passionate and committed trustees in the areas of education, legal, not-for-profit, Fundraising, financial management, media, communication, Mentoring / Coaching, HR, Governance, monitoring and evaluation, Strategic development, and planning.

Role Purpose

Role purpose to provide advice and guidance on a range of issues to support the strategic development and running of African Community School (ACS).

We need trustees who can support our mission and will be committed to working with us to further our growth as a small organisation, for the benefit of the young people and family we work for.

We need multi-skilled trustees who reflect the cultures, ethnicities, and languages of the families we work with in Hackney and surrounding boroughs. We particularly welcome trustees with lived experience of bringing up children in challenging circumstances. This is important as we work towards a better understanding of how best to support children and families in Hackney and surrounding boroughs.

Commitment & Expectations

The trustees are expected to:

  • Attend 4 x quarterly Management committee meetings per year and the Annual General Meeting
  • Attend performances and special events when possible
  • Prepare for meetings by reviewing papers and having an up-to-date understanding of the issues facing the organisation
  • Advise the charity on issues arising, particularly within your area of specialism
  • Support the executive team through informed questioning and oversight to ensure the organisation’s legal responsibilities and strategic objectives are achieved
  • Promote the organisation’s work through your networks and positively represent the organisation at all times.
  • Trustees will be for 3 years with the possibility for extension of up to a further 2 years to ensure stability and sustainability of the committees focus re objectives and delivery outcomes

What impact will you have as a trustee?

Having a strong, reliable and passionate trustees are crucial for our sustainability as a small organisation. As a trustee you will work together with other trustees and chair to make the final decisions, and most importantly support our Team.

The trustees will offer strategic oversight, ensuring that the organisation meets its legal and financial responsibilities, as well as responsibilities towards its beneficiaries and stakeholders. Trustee will take particular responsibility for oversight over objective of the strategic plan, ensuring that the organisation is reaching its stated targets and supporting the team to reach its goals.

Although there are no pending legal matters or concerns in the organisation, candidates should be willing to give advice should legal questions arise and be aware of how decisions may affect the organisation legally and reputationally.

The trustee will provide a leadership role in ensuring that the board of trustees fulfils its responsibilities for setting the strategy and governance of the organisation.
